"The new generation 86, a prime example of 21st-century compact, FR philosophy."
The FT-86 Concept was announced in 2009 to the delight of Japanese sports car enthusiasts worldwide. It was an exciting compact front engine/rear drive sports car developed in cooperation by Toyota and Subaru that rekindled the spirit of the legendary Toyota AE86. In 2011, the production model of the Toyota version made its long-awaited debut at the Tokyo Motor Show.
The FT (Future Toyota) designation has been removed, making its official name the Toyota 86. This new-generation "Hachiroku" (86 in Japanese) features a silhouette similar to the FT-86 II Concept shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor SHow. The sleek body adopts Toyota's "Aero Handling" concept, where the car is held to the ground from all directions through advanced aerodynamics.
The naturally aspirated 1998cc DOHC 4-cylinder boxer engine mounted front amidships produces 197 HP at 7000 rpm and 151.1 ft-lb at 6600 rpm, transferred to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The front/rear weight distribution is 53:47, allowing for optimal rear-end controllability and excellent steering feedback. The center of gravity of the 86 is equivalent to that of supercars, sitting only 460 mm off the ground. The standard grade modal with manual gearbox weighs 1230 kg, and some models will feature a limited-slip differential to further improve handling.
There are also plans for custom tuning parts from Modelista and TRD, and a customizable grade model for competition use. In sum, the 86 is a lightweight sports car that truly caters to today's young car enthusiast.
